National Scotch Whisky Day - Decatur

In honor of National Scotch Whisky Day, men came out wearing their kilts on July 27 in Decatur. Mac McGee's Irish Pub hosted the event offering an array of special whisky flights. While this event encouraged men to attend in their kilts for complimentary whisky sampling, Turpin Ballard and Ray Bowen do not need a Scottish holiday or function to wear the traditional Scottish mens garment as they wear the kilt in their daily lives.

Ray Bowen of Atlanta came out to Mac McGee's to celebrate National Scotch Whisky Day. Mr Bowen is a blacksmith/artist in Atlanta. More about Mr. Bowen at http://www.invictusforge.com/

In The Stores...Made In The USA

I'd like to highlight 2 quality thrift store purchases I made this week. I found a pair of shoes and an ivy cap manufactured by designers right here in the U.S. I found the wool ivy cap designed by Broner at the Goodwill in Buckhead for $1.91. Broner began manufacturing gloves for auto plant workers in Detroit, MI in 1933. Broner is currently headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan.  I found a pair of brown leather Oxford style shoes from Zota. Zota designs shoes in City of Industry, California. The shoes are designed with an Italian design and quality. I found this pair from the Value Village in Decatur for $3.99. I have to admit I never heard of these designers before this find. However, it was clear when I found them, the quality in the stitching and detail was to a high standard and meticulous.

Lola

The streets of Atlanta may be my playground. The street for Lola is her home. I see Lola regularly in Downtown Atlanta. She's usually taking in the shade of a tree in Woodruff Park. I took a candid photograph of her back in June. She recently shaved her head after catching lice as a result of sitting under the trees for so long. Nothing about my appeal to photograph Lola is associated with her clothing style. I concluded in my observations of Lola that she is a woman disconnected with modern society and technology. I'm intrigued by her simplicity amongst the hustle and bustsle of daily life for most.  She possesses a blissful stare that appears to see through all the b.s. around her. There was a mystique to her that I didn't want to intrude on. I opted to let the mystery be.

Until yesterday... I had a brief encounter with Lola sitting at a table outside of Starbucks on the corner of Peachtree and Luckie. I introduced myself and chatted briefly about what I'm doing. It appears some of my preconceived ideas of her character are true. Here is a result of a quick portrait she approved of me taking. I'm looking forward to more random encounters on the street with Lola.

In The Stores...

I feel the need to share some recent thrift store finds as a "proper blogger" should. I found some excellent quality mens shirts yesterday at the Goodwill in Buckhead. Unfortunately the Burberry ($4.97!) I snapped with my camera phone wasn't my size. I walked out with 5 from names like Geoffrey Beene, Olivier Strelli and Hollister for a total of $15.86! I highly recommend the Goodwill Buckhead; my current favorite thrift store in the Atlanta area for clothes.

I visited B&R Thrift Store in Roswell for the first time yesterday. This store has a rack where they relegate the high end shirts such as this Ben Sherman they are offering for $20.00 (original retail $99.00).

Braves Game - Turner Field

The gentleman in the chair is Jeremy Maddox with his girl friend Amy. He suffered a spinal cord injury in a Motocross accident in 1998. He hasn't allowed the accident to prevent his need for speed. He competes regularly around the country in wheelchair racing competitions such as Atlanta's own Peachtree Road Race held on July 4th. I didn't know anything about him when I took these photographs. However, I quickly detected a man who thrives to live for his passions instead of his restrictions. This may seem like a different approach for this blog. I believe "style" isn't always about the clothes, it's a persona, attitude, and how we truly influence others.
